Our next event is a classic nautical double feature
A classic by Buster Keaton (circa.1921) called The Boat
Our main feature is the classic, Knife in the Water (Cert. PG)

We start with a silent classic by Buster Keaton (circa.1921) called The Boat . Buster's handmade boat, The Damfino (get it?), is finished and is, of course, too large to get through the basement door. When he drives off with it in tow, the side of his house, then the whole thing, collapses. At the harbour he sails the boat out only to have it sink beneath him. The rest of the film is a series of adventures that he and his family have with the restored boat.

It is, of course, a silent film and we hope to have a local celebrity playing LIVE accompanying music on the piano!

After a short break for refreshment at the bar, we then present our main feature which is the classic, Knife in the Water (Cert. PG)

The international breakthrough feature film by Roman Polanski (circa.1962) called Knife in the Water is a cagy and sophisticated art film, masterfully judged to take the West by surprise. It provided the springboard for one of the most impressive directorial careers ever. A grey, moody character study of two males' subtle competition for a female, it has an almost uncanny ability to draw one into its hyper-naturalistic surface. The acting and the direction of actors for camera are so good that Polanski is able to enclose us entirely within his tiny world on a small sailboat.

The Titfield Thunderbolt
26th February, 2010

On Friday night, 26th February, 33 members of the FilmSoc enjoyed chatting to railway model enthusiasts over a glass of wine, whilst discussing the handmade models on exhibition at Chidham & Hambrook Village Hall.

Thanks go to John Pitts who brought his impressive 1:12 scale model of an “Antelope” Class steam locomotive, to John Worsley, Andy Collins and others who brought their models along too.
Afterwards, everyone enjoyed watching the film “The Titfield Thunderbolt” upstairs and gave it a round of applause at the end!
Thanks to John Wingrove for the report and Matthew Woods for the photos

When funds are available we will address this problem by buying new seats. In the meantime, if you share this view C & H FilmSoc invite you to, "Bring your own cushion" , to the next screening, this Friday, 26th March of the Titfield Thunderbolt.

Synopsis and Trivia

Synopsis

Released in 1953 by the famous Ealing Studios, the film tells the story of how the Titfield villagers fight the closure of their local branch line by British Railways. It's fun and games when a group of villagers band together to run it themselves, in the face of opposition from a bus company. The film was made on location on the Camerton branch line, an ex GWR railway which ran through the beautiful Cam Valley just south of Bath .

Film Trivia:

  • Writer T.E.B. Clarke ("Tibby") was inspired to write the Titfield Thunderbolt saga after a 1951 visit to the volunteer-operated Talyllyn Railway, which carries passengers and slate along the Cambrian coast between Towyn and Abergynolwyn, in Wales . "The Titfield Thunderbolt" reflects Clarke's fascination with the volunteers' preservationist spirit there.
  • 'Gregson, John' had never driven a car before making this film.
  • The credited driver, fireman and guard were not actors, they were British Railways employees from Westbury depot and were originally to be uncredited extras. After director Charles Crichton spoke to them on location and realized they "looked and sounded the part", they were given speaking parts.
  • The 'Thunderbolt' is a genuine veteran locomotive, its real name is 'Lion'. It was built for the Liverpool and Manchester railway in 1838, making it 115 years old when it was used in the film.
  • The locomotive, "Lion" was damaged during filming when the carriage train is reunited with the locomotive. The rear frame was bent by the force of the impact. The damage was still visible in 2001.
  • A wooden replica of "Lion" was made for the scene where "Thunderbolt" is removed from the museum.
  • A replica locomotive was built on the chassis of a Bedford truck for the scene where the locomotive is seen driving down the road.
  • Writer T.E.B. Clarke was a neighbor of Richard Beeching, then Director of ICI, at the time of filming. Beeching's 1963 report "The Re-shaping of British Railways" resulted in the wholesale closure of many branch lines like the one portrayed in the movie.
  • The final scenes of Mallingford station were filmed at the Bath Road Bridge end of the main platform at Bristol Temple Meads station, Bristol , UK .
  • The name Titfield created by T.E.B. Clarke the from the adjacent villages of Titsey and Limpsfield in Surrey .
It's 2010 and Christmas is already a distant memory.
Chidham & Hambrook Film Society
are springing back to life with their next presentation on Friday, 29th January. This time it's
The Rocky Horror Picture Show a cult film of the 70's.
It's weird and wonderful as newly wed couple Brad and Janet encounter a problem when their car breaks down in the rain. They both look for help, only to find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. A place to stay is offered, but will Brad and Janet want to remain there? Especially when a large group of Transylvanians dance to the 'Time Warp'. Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man and there is a whole host of participation for the audience to enjoy.
Traditionally audience participation is encouraged; see http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/
However, at the Village Hall we would request that participation is kept at sensible levels. By all means feel free to dress up for the occasion, but the throwing of toilet rolls and rice would not be appropriate here!
Date: Friday, 29th January; Time: 7:00pm;  Tickets: £5 members, £6 non-members from 574074 or 572902 or take a chance at the door!
Licensed bar, 1st drink free! All proceeds to the hall restoration fund.
Normally we present film shows on the last Friday of the months of Oct, Nov, Jan, Feb, Mar and Apr. So please keep 26th Feb, 26th Mar and 30th Apr free in your diaries to enable you to enjoy the rest of the FilmSoc Season.

The Age of Stupid is the new four-year epic from McLibel director Franny Armstrong. Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?
With a fresh approach, this documentary combines a series of global warming-related stories with a linking device that's both clever and gimmicky. But it also proves the difficulty of making a film on this important topic that's not depressing.
In 2055, the remnants of humanity are being preserved by an archivist (Postlethwaite) who looks back at the events leading up to the global climate tipping point 40 years earlier. He shows us six stories: a Mumbai businessman (Wadia) is setting up India's first low-cost airline; a British developer (Guy) battles protesters to install a wind farm; a New Orleans oil company scientist (Duvernay) rescues people after Hurricane Katrina; a Nigerian medical student (Malemi) struggles against oil company pollution; an 82-year-old French mountain guide (Pareau) watches as an Alpine glacier melts away; and an 8-year-old Iraqi girl (Bayyoud) yearns for her brother to join her as a refugee in Jordan.
Each of these stories is lively and fascinating, and filmmaker Armstrong includes current news footage, clever effects work, terrific animated segments and a wealth of information that's often quite scary. The key question is why we're not stopping climate change while we still can. Individually, none of the stories seem particularly devastating, but by intercutting between them, the cumulative effect highlights our individual responsibility to take care of the planet and do what we can.
On the other hand, as with other climate change docs (including Al Gore's more entertaining An Inconvenient Truth), the ultimate feeling is one of helplessness. While we can make key individual choices, it's the world's leaders who must push for significant changes. And we know that's not likely to happen in a world where oil is such a key player both economically and politically.
The oil companies are the villains in this film, with evidence of greed and injustice that's often overpowering. Oil profits rarely benefit residents of the countries where it's found, and lobbyists make sure alternative energy sources can never find equal footing. But the filmmakers also go after consumer culture, in which we throw out anything we're tired of and believe the capitalism myth that economic growth can continue forever. It's this attitude that has made us afraid of taking direct action to find a balance of equity and sustainability. And that's pretty stupid.

Film Night at the Village Hall

On Friday 5th June Chidham & Hambrook Film Society celebrate the end of their first season with the screening of 'Touching the Void'. A true story of a climbing adventure in the Andes that doesn’t go exactly to plan.

This is the true story of two young British climbers Simon Yates and Joe Simpson, who in 1985 set off to scale the hitherto unclimbed West Face of the Siula Grande, a 21,000ft peak in the Peruvian Andes. Simpson and Yates reach the summit but shortly after starting the descent, an accident turns their daring expedition into a desperate fight for survival.

One climber is badly injured. Using alpine climbing techniques, the two climbers are roped together and try to descend to safety. Later the injured climber falls into a crevasse - still attached to his mate by a rope. The able bodied climber is in danger of being pulled in too.

What would you do? Fall to your deaths together or cut the rope?

'Kung Fu Panda' success
Wed 29th October
(Half term week)
Chidham & Hambrook Film Society's first children's matinee was enjoyed on Wednesday afternoon by 40 parents and children upstairs in the village hall. The room and stage were transformed by Bill Thomas into a village cinema. Using his professional equipment and 8' x 10' screen, he was able to work cinemagraphic magic and entertain the filmgoers with a top quality presentation, not yet released to DVD.
Kung Fu Panda had the children and parents cheering as, true to tradition, the force of good overcomes the "baddie" and they all live happily ever after! Bill Thomas is happy to make the Children's Matinee a regular feature in the village hall at half-term. So let's hope all those who enjoyed it this week will tell their friends so that next time, in February, we will be able to fill the hall with families having fun!
