Ben Afflek's third film as director is a superb thriller, based on a true story, re-creating the extraordinarily unlikely rescue attempt of six consular staff during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979.

The film has received universally outstanding reviews - very funny, but also a nail-biting suspense film.

' THE DESCENDANTS ' starring George Clooney
Set in Hawaii, it is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic story of Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family's land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries. It won several awards, including an Oscar for best screenplay for Alexander Payne. An outstanding performance by Clooney.

One of the best loved films from last year.
Brilliant! - watch the trailer

Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie and a host of other well known British actors star in this film about British retirees who travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways.

Adapted from the book “These foolish Things” by Deborah Moggach, the film is directed by John Maddon ( Shakespeare in Love).

For the third year running the Film Society are putting on an Outdoor Cinema event. Those who have been before will testify what a great evening this is. Picnics, wine, music and as the sun goes down the big screen lights up and the magic begins. After small beginnings last year's event attracted 250 people. This year will be bigger and better than before. There will be a licensed bar, O'Hagan's hot dog and burger stall, popcorn and candy floss. Dress up, bring chairs, a picnic and your dancing shoes to boogie to a ‘50's sound track on a fabulous Summer Night. The event takes place in the field opposite the Old House at Home. It opens at 7.30 to give you plenty of time to eat, drink and dance before the film starts at sun down – about 9.20pm .
All money raised from ticket sales will go towards the refurbishment of Chidham and Hambrook Village Hall, a lovely old malt house. We would like to thank our sponsors Taylor Wimpey, The Village Magazine and Bosham Walk Craft Centre.

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY ( cert 15)
The 2011 version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, directed by Tomas Alfredson ( Let the Right One In) and starring Gary Oldman heading a supreme cast ,has been hailed as a marvelously chilling and masterful adaptation of John Le Carre's famous novel of the same name.

The international thriller is set at the height of the Cold War years of the mid-20th Century. George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a disgraced British spy, is rehired in secret by his government - which fears that the British Secret Intelligence Service, a.k.a. MI-6, has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets. The identity of the mole — who was passing secrets to the Russians — is narrowed down and some of the suspects are nicknamed with the nursery rhyme occupations of the title.

Tinker Tailor is a period piece that's about mood as much as it is about drama. Made by a Swede who is an outsider to the British class system, it's unusually sensitive to the ways in which the Establishment represented by the intelligence services is itself filled with outsiders. As a result, this is an adaptation that's less posh, less clubby than the television version. It looks back at the Cold War era – its cruelties and banalities – with a clear, cold eye.

Tinker Tailor has received three OSCAR nominations

Best Actor in a leading role .................Gary Oldman
Music......................................................Alberto Iglesias
Best Adapted screenplay..................... Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan

Sadly, Bridget O'Connor died last year at the age of 49 so knew nothing of the nomination.

Supporting Cast:
John Hurt - Colin Firth - Benedict Cumberbatch - Toby Jones - Mark Strong
Tom Hardy - Ciaran Hinds

The Great White Silence (1924) Friday Jan 27th -
7.30pm for 8pm
Village Hall

About 'The Great White Silence'

Newly restored by the BFI, The Great White Silence is a deeply moving account of Scott's sea journey south from New Zealand and, once his team reaches Antarctica, their preparations for the long walk.

A hundred years ago the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) led by Captain Scott set out on its ill-fated race to the South Pole. Joining Scott on board the Terra Nova was official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting, and the images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since.

Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife - including the characterful Adélie penguins. Those things he was unable to film he boldly recreated back home. Most importantly, Ponting recorded the preparations for the assault on the Pole - from the trials of the caterpillar track sledges to clothing and cooking equipment - giving us a real sense of the challenges faced by the expedition.

Ponting used his footage in various forms over the years and in 1924 he re-edited it into this remarkable feature, complete with vivid tinting and toning. The BFI National Archive - custodian of the Expedition negatives - has restored the film using the latest photochemical and digital techniques and reintroduced the film's sophisticated use of colour. The alien beauty of the landscape is brought dramatically to life and the world of the expedition revealed in brilliant detail.

Today, we are familiar with documentaries from inaccessible places, but here to some extent, is the mystery and majesty of the landscape restored. Part of the thrill of watching Herbert Ponting's extraordinary record of Captain Scott's doomed race to the South Pole is knowing that its original audiences must have been watching at least some of these sights on film for the first time: killer whales, their dorsal fins menacing up from the sea; querulous penguins; fearsome crystal cliffs of ice.

Happy New Year!

Through visually stunning footage shot entirely from the air from over 50 countries, photographer Yann Arthus-Bernard shows us a view of the world most of us we have never seen. posted Mar 12
Notes from Wikipedia
The documentary chronicles the present day state of the Earth, its climate and how we as the dominant species have long-term repercussions on its future. A theme expressed throughout the documentary is that of linkage—how all organisms and the Earth are linked in a "delicate but crucial" natural balance with each other, and how no organism can be self-sufficient.

The first 15 minutes include footage of the beginning of the natural world, starting with single-celled algae developing at the edges of volcanic springs. By showing algae's essential role in the evolution of photosynthesis, it also explores the innumerable species of plants which all have their origins in this one-celled life form.

In the rest of the first hour of the film, the documentary takes on a more human-oriented focus, showing the agricultural revolution and its impacts, before moving on to talk about the harnessing of oil, leading to fire, industry, cities and inequality gaps like never before. It portrays the current predicament regarding cattle ranches, deforestation, food and water shortages, the use of non-renewable "fossil water", the over-quarrying crisis and the shortage of energy, namely electricity. Cities such as New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Shenzhen, Mumbai, Tokyo and Dubai are used as examples of the mismanagement and wastage of energy, water and food. The recession of marshlands and glaciers are shown in vast aerial shots of Antarctica, The North Pole and Africa, while mass emigration and refugee counts are shown currently and forecast in the event that these events remains unchanged.

It is at this point that the film begins to focus on global warming and the carbon crisis. Home shows how melting glaciers, rising sea levels and changing weather patterns are ravaging the people who have least to do with climate change, but also how it soon will affect rich populous areas.

Here, about three minutes of film is given to displaying harsh facts in large white text on a black background followed by a video representation of the fact. This is followed by a positive conclusion. The documentary claims to show the "awful truths" regarding our impact on the Earth, but also what we are now doing to combat and reverse it: including renewable energy, the creation of more and more national parks, international co-operation between various nations on environmental issues and the extra education and reform being had across the globe in response to the current problems facing the earth.

Production
Home was filmed in various stages due to the expanse of the areas portrayed. Taking over eighteen months to complete, director Yann Arthus-Bertrand and a camera man, a camera engineer and a pilot flew in a small helicopter through various regions in over fifty countries. The filming was done using high-definition "Cineflex" cameras which were suspended from a gyro-stabilized sphere from rails on the base of the helicopter. These cameras, originally manufactured for army firing equipment, reduce vibrations helping to capture smooth images, which appear as if they had been filmed from crane arms or dollies. After almost every flight, recordings were immediately checked to ensure they were usable. After filming was complete, Besson and his crew had over 488 hours of footage to edit.

Friday, 4 March: “WIND” (Cert PG) see film info

Francis Ford Coppola’s production of “Wind” directed by Carroll Ballard is a great look at the sport of competitive sailing and also contains an insight into marine engineering and the process of design and development.

Matthew Modine plays Will Parker, a good sailor who is slightly overconfident about his skills. He joins the crew for the Americas Cup, but his actions help to lose the nation's undefeated title to their tough Australian rivals. This was more than just a loss of the cup to the new world champions. It also ended his relationship with girlfriend Kate Bass (Jennifer Grey) and robs the boat captain of his confidence.

But, Will Parker, with the next Cup race rolling around wants to reunite a team, and seeks the help of Kate and her new beau Joe (Stellan Skarsgård) to help him rebuild his confidence, his team, and a better boat. Will and his team challenge the Aussie's to defend their title for a second year.

The subject of the movie will appeal to all those with an interest in sailing and adventure. The photography is superb as you get the personal perspective of competitive sailing and the film really gives an appreciation of what all goes into the sport.

We are continuing our season with the dark comedy / thriller IN BRUGES . Bruges, the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray and Ken, it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss to go and lie low in this the storybook city for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists.

As they explore the city (which definitely shares top billing) the consequences are comic, dark, weird and emotional while they await further instructions from their boss in London.

Our next event is a classic nautical double feature
A classic by Buster Keaton (circa.1921) called
The Boat

Our main feature is the classic, Knife in the Water (Cert. PG)

We start with a silent classic by Buster Keaton (circa.1921) called The Boat . Buster's handmade boat, The Damfino (get it?), is finished and is, of course, too large to get through the basement door. When he drives off with it in tow, the side of his house, then the whole thing, collapses. At the harbour he sails the boat out only to have it sink beneath him. The rest of the film is a series of adventures that he and his family have with the restored boat.

It is, of course, a silent film and we hope to have a local celebrity playing LIVE accompanying music on the piano!

After a short break for refreshment at the bar, we then present our main feature which is the classic, Knife in the Water (Cert. PG)

The international breakthrough feature film by Roman Polanski (circa.1962) called Knife in the Water is a cagy and sophisticated art film, masterfully judged to take the West by surprise. It provided the springboard for one of the most impressive directorial careers ever. A grey, moody character study of two males' subtle competition for a female, it has an almost uncanny ability to draw one into its hyper-naturalistic surface. The acting and the direction of actors for camera are so good that Polanski is able to enclose us entirely within his tiny world on a small sailboat.

On Friday night, 26th February, 33 members of the FilmSoc enjoyed chatting to railway model enthusiasts over a glass of wine, whilst discussing the handmade models on exhibition at Chidham & Hambrook Village Hall.

Thanks go to John Pitts who brought his impressive 1:12 scale model of an “Antelope” Class steam locomotive, to John Worsley, Andy Collins and others who brought their models along too.
Afterwards, everyone enjoyed watching the film “The Titfield Thunderbolt” upstairs and gave it a round of applause at the end!
Thanks to John Wingrove for the report and Matthew Woods for the photos

Synopsis and Trivia

Synopsis

Released in 1953 by the famous Ealing Studios, the film tells the story of how the Titfield villagers fight the closure of their local branch line by British Railways. It's fun and games when a group of villagers band together to run it themselves, in the face of opposition from a bus company. The film was made on location on the Camerton branch line, an ex GWR railway which ran through the beautiful Cam Valley just south of Bath .

Clarke ("Tibby") was inspired to write the Titfield Thunderbolt saga after a 1951 visit to the volunteer-operated Talyllyn Railway, which carries passengers and slate along the Cambrian coast between Towyn and Abergynolwyn, in Wales . "The Titfield Thunderbolt" reflects Clarke's fascination with the volunteers' preservationist spirit there.
  • 'Gregson, John' had never driven a car before making this film.
  • The credited driver, fireman and guard were not actors, they were British Railways employees from Westbury depot and were originally to be uncredited extras. After director Charles Crichton spoke to them on location and realized they "looked and sounded the part", they were given speaking parts.
  • The 'Thunderbolt' is a genuine veteran locomotive, its real name is 'Lion'. It was built for the Liverpool and Manchester railway in 1838, making it 115 years old when it was used in the film.
  • The locomotive, "Lion" was damaged during filming when the carriage train is reunited with the locomotive. The rear frame was bent by the force of the impact. The damage was still visible in 2001.
  • A wooden replica of "Lion" was made for the scene where "Thunderbolt" is removed from the museum.
  • A replica locomotive was built on the chassis of a Bedford truck for the scene where the locomotive is seen driving down the road.
  • Writer T.E.B. Clarke was a neighbor of Richard Beeching, then Director of ICI, at the time of filming. Beeching's 1963 report "The Re-shaping of British Railways" resulted in the wholesale closure of many branch lines like the one portrayed in the movie.
  • The final scenes of Mallingford station were filmed at the Bath Road Bridge end of the main platform at Bristol Temple Meads station, Bristol , UK .
  • The name Titfield created by T.E.B. Clarke the from the adjacent villages of Titsey and Limpsfield in Surrey .
It's 2010 and Christmas is already a distant memory.
Chidham & Hambrook Film Society
are springing back to life with their next presentation on Friday, 29th January. This time it's
The Rocky Horror Picture Show a cult film of the 70's.
It's weird and wonderful as newly wed couple Brad and Janet encounter a problem when their car breaks down in the rain. They both look for help, only to find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. A place to stay is offered, but will Brad and Janet want to remain there? Especially when a large group of Transylvanians dance to the 'Time Warp'. Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man and there is a whole host of participation for the audience to enjoy.
Traditionally audience participation is encouraged; see http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/
However, at the Village Hall we would request that participation is kept at sensible levels. By all means feel free to dress up for the occasion, but the throwing of toilet rolls and rice would not be appropriate here!
Date: Friday, 29th January; Time: 7:00pm;  Tickets: £5 members, £6 non-members from 574074 or 572902 or take a chance at the door!
Licensed bar, 1st drink free! All proceeds to the hall restoration fund.
Normally we present film shows on the last Friday of the months of Oct, Nov, Jan, Feb, Mar and Apr. So please keep 26th Feb, 26th Mar and 30th Apr free in your diaries to enable you to enjoy the rest of the FilmSoc Season.

The Age of Stupid is the new four-year epic from McLibel director Franny Armstrong. Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?
With a fresh approach, this documentary combines a series of global warming-related stories with a linking device that's both clever and gimmicky. But it also proves the difficulty of making a film on this important topic that's not depressing.
In 2055, the remnants of humanity are being preserved by an archivist (Postlethwaite) who looks back at the events leading up to the global climate tipping point 40 years earlier. He shows us six stories: a Mumbai businessman (Wadia) is setting up India's first low-cost airline; a British developer (Guy) battles protesters to install a wind farm; a New Orleans oil company scientist (Duvernay) rescues people after Hurricane Katrina; a Nigerian medical student (Malemi) struggles against oil company pollution; an 82-year-old French mountain guide (Pareau) watches as an Alpine glacier melts away; and an 8-year-old Iraqi girl (Bayyoud) yearns for her brother to join her as a refugee in Jordan.
Each of these stories is lively and fascinating, and filmmaker Armstrong includes current news footage, clever effects work, terrific animated segments and a wealth of information that's often quite scary. The key question is why we're not stopping climate change while we still can. Individually, none of the stories seem particularly devastating, but by intercutting between them, the cumulative effect highlights our individual responsibility to take care of the planet and do what we can.
On the other hand, as with other climate change docs (including Al Gore's more entertaining An Inconvenient Truth), the ultimate feeling is one of helplessness. While we can make key individual choices, it's the world's leaders who must push for significant changes. And we know that's not likely to happen in a world where oil is such a key player both economically and politically.
The oil companies are the villains in this film, with evidence of greed and injustice that's often overpowering. Oil profits rarely benefit residents of the countries where it's found, and lobbyists make sure alternative energy sources can never find equal footing. But the filmmakers also go after consumer culture, in which we throw out anything we're tired of and believe the capitalism myth that economic growth can continue forever. It's this attitude that has made us afraid of taking direct action to find a balance of equity and sustainability. And that's pretty stupid.

Film Night at the Village Hall

On Friday 5th June Chidham & Hambrook Film Society celebrate the end of their first season with the screening of 'Touching the Void'. A true story of a climbing adventure in the Andes that doesn’t go exactly to plan.

This is the true story of two young British climbers Simon Yates and Joe Simpson, who in 1985 set off to scale the hitherto unclimbed West Face of the Siula Grande, a 21,000ft peak in the Peruvian Andes. Simpson and Yates reach the summit but shortly after starting the descent, an accident turns their daring expedition into a desperate fight for survival.

One climber is badly injured. Using alpine climbing techniques, the two climbers are roped together and try to descend to safety. Later the injured climber falls into a crevasse - still attached to his mate by a rope. The able bodied climber is in danger of being pulled in too.

What would you do? Fall to your deaths together or cut the rope?

'Kung Fu Panda' success
Wed 29th October
(Half term week)
Chidham & Hambrook Film Society's first children's matinee was enjoyed on Wednesday afternoon by 40 parents and children upstairs in the village hall. The room and stage were transformed by Bill Thomas into a village cinema. Using his professional equipment and 8' x 10' screen, he was able to work cinemagraphic magic and entertain the filmgoers with a top quality presentation, not yet released to DVD.
Kung Fu Panda had the children and parents cheering as, true to tradition, the force of good overcomes the "baddie" and they all live happily ever after! Bill Thomas is happy to make the Children's Matinee a regular feature in the village hall at half-term. So let's hope all those who enjoyed it this week will tell their friends so that next time, in February, we will be able to fill the hall with families having fun!
