Does anyone remember Lazi-lea Holiday Camp, that existed on the site in Broad Road that is now occupied by Hambrook Holiday Park? It is thought that the original holiday camp existed up to the early 1960s and was in existence during 1956 & 1957.
If you have any memories or information, please get in touch.

I went there for a week in about 1957 from Houndsfield Road school in Edmonton North London. I believe it was to give us city kids a break from the pollution and let us have a taste of the countryside. As I remember it looked like a collection of old wooden army huts. It was the first time we’d had the luxury of running hot water and showers.

A lot of us went to Lazalea camp from Houndsfield school in North London in 1957 or 1958, I think it was used by LEAs to give us a taste of fresh air and the countryside. I seem to remember it as a collection of old army huts.

I remember going in about 1956 or 7 from Houndsfield Road school in Edmonton north London. I think it was mainly to get us some fresh air away from the pollution and to see some countryside. I recollect that it consisted of old army huts and we visited Arundel Castle and the Isle of Wight.

I remember Lazalea Holiday Camp only too well. Our school, St Boniface in Tooting, went there for about a week in either 1956 or 1957. It was a real dump. The “chalets” were a collection of old huts and railway carriages with bunks in them. The “ballroom” was just a very large hut, where we had some lessons. The owners were really strict and came around almost every night to complain about the noise, even though it was just us kids talking. We did have some nice trips out though. I do remember that it was in the NFPHC holiday camp directory, which meant that people actually paid to stay there. I did drive past it about 10 years or more ago and it still looked very run down, but with more modern caravans.
