Youth Group trip to Weymouth - 2011
St Mary’s Youth Group had a wonderful 3 day trip to Weymouth and Portland in May. We all left St Wilfrid’s on Saturday morning in a minibus and 4 cars, heading for Dorset. Father David came with us for the day and on the way we stopped at Badbury Rings near Wimborne for our lunch and a game of cricket. Badbury Rings is an Iron Age Fort maintained by the National Trust and well worth a visit if you haven’t been there. After lunch we continued our journey to Weymouth and headed straight for the beach. As you can see from the photos we managed to find Father David a deck chair so that he could enjoy an afternoon of warm sunshine watching the ships go by. We meanwhile made sandcastles, played cricket and football, perfected sand sculptures, went paddling, gave a dead pigeon a funeral (!), ate ice creams ( a big thank you to Father David for those) and generally had a lovely time. At 5pm we took Father David to the train station for his journey home and went off to our Youth Hostel on Portland. After a delicious evening meal we went for a walk and a clamber on the rocks at Portland Bill. On Sunday after breakfast we went to Abbotsbury Swannery. The weather was less kind and the wind blew quite hard but the swans made up for it. Everyone managed to be chosen to feed them during the public feeding session so smiles all round. In the afternoon we visited Nothe Fort in Weymouth. It is an old Victorian fort with a labyrinth of underground passageways to explore and several historical amd military exhibits. The views from the top of the fort across the coast were stunning even if it was a little windy. After ice creams we went to the Nothe Gardens for a game of rounders and then headed back to Portland. Sunday evening saw our usual round of ‘talent’ shows. This year each room had been issued with a challenge; the older girls had to produce a wedding with all the trimmings, the boys gave us an Olympic opening ceremony, the younger girls the story of the Three Little Pigs and the men gave us Little Red Riding Hood – the Opera (there is a rumour this can be seen on youtube but don’t all rush at once!). Needless to say the young people’s performances were wonderful and full of imagination. And the men? Well they certainly performed! On Monday morning we went back into Weymouth and headed for the souvenir shops. While we were shopping the heavens opened and there was a huge thunderstorm. When this had cleared we headed for the funfair and finished our weekend with rides and doughnuts! |
