Tree planting in Broad Road For some years now the Parish Council has been advertising funds towards tree planting schemes around the villages with little success. Earlier this year Councillor Woolley suggested a more enclosed Broad Road may help reduce speeding traffic along with obvious visual improvements particularly in areas where recent years storm damage has taken its toll. The Parish Council met with West Sussex County Councils tree officer, Mark Warwick, with the following objective; To enhance and ensure continuity of the existing tree-lined character of the highway To preserve the natural appearance of the landscape with the use of tree types Select planting of the chosen tree types at adequate spacing to allow for additional planting in the future and to introduce some formality to the treescape. Mark proposed two tree types: Acer campestre Elegant - a cultivar of Field Maple with a more uniform crown of medium size 10-15m in height. As proposed, the scheme currently identifies six of each type to be planted with a girth at 1m of 10-12cm. The current cost for WSCC to purchase and plant the trees, including services searches and approvals is £1088.16. Early year maintenance is included in this figure. At the July Parish Council meeting it was felt only a maximum of £750 could be allocated to the scheme from this year's budget, leaving a short fall of £338.16! We are anxious to pursue other sources of funding for the project and invite residents, businesses and village organisations to contribute as they see fit. If you would like to pledge or help with the planting, if the scheme can be funded please contact, Steve ClarkTrees are the best monuments that a man can erect to his own memory. |
