| The Boundary Cup - Hawks v Emsworth (A) - - - - Scorecard | |
The Chidham and Hambrook Hawks took their first ever silverware with an impressive win over near rivals Emsworth to clinch The Boundary Cup. A superb opening partnership of 91, Mat 54 & Paul 27 followed by a crushing 64 from Justin, gave The Hawks their best 40 over total ever of 238. All bowlers bowled well with Clive and Justin 3 wickets each, Andy 2 and Steve 1, leaving Emsworth 166-9 off their 36 overs. |
|
Skipper Haskett commented, "Although it was a great win the best part of the contest was the spirit and camaraderie the game was played in". It was drinks all round as the winning side were wined and dined in The Coal Exchange after the game by a gallant Emsworth team. |

| July 8 Hawks v Bosham (home) Scorecard | |
| This was the Hawks first match against Bosham, who play league cricket and could be a stern test. Sponsored by The Berkley arms and skippered by Martian Furrell, Bosham made a good start by winning the toss, but played into the Hawks hands by asking them to bat first, a situation they relish. |
|
Not a good start - Matt clean bowled in the first over! With two late comers unable to find the ground Keith and David helped Bosham out in the field, but were fortunately untroubled as a second wicket fell in the third over; Neil with an inside edge on to his pad and then the stumps - met with a huge giggle from the pavilion as Matt looked on! Andy Wild joined opener Paul at the crease, but it was soon 3 down as Paul miss judged a full toss, one of many, another clean bowled. Paul O'D was off the mark first ball with a 4 as the ship steadied. 39 for 3 off 7 Keith joined Paul hoping to continue his recent return to form, but next ball The Hawks had two new batsmen at the wicket when Paul smashed a 4 and retired on 27. |
|
Keith scored successive boundaries, both hooked to leg - Matt looked crestfallen on the pavilion steps as the middle order filled their boots.
82 for 4 of 10 Matt twiddling his thumbs decided at this point to take an interest in the game and took up a fielding position behind the ropes, and just in front of his car! |
|
| The 100 came up in the 14 th with a lofted 4 over the bowlers head by Tommy. Keith retired to huge cheer from the Hawks, JK entered the fray and Tommy started to hit out-6 into the grounds mans hut and retirement as Matt reached for his car keys. 123 for 5 of 17 |
|
JK and David knocked singles easily and a rare 4 from Dave was cheered like a century before another clean bowled! JK making way for Steve C, who was off the mark with a cheeky one following a great call from David at the far end. Second ball 4 Em! Could we have under estimated Bosham? Dave had revenge in his second over with a catch to Matt with Keith in close attendance, followed soon afterwards by the same combination. Andy W was unlucky to have one put down by Tommy-but it was into full sun, son! Andy then took a catch off Steve Clark and the pair later swopped roles as Steve snatched one at the second attempt off Andy's bowling in the deep. Josh had a fine spell and a clean bowled, with Keith chipping in for the 6 th wicket-again an Andy Wild catch, who was having an exceptional match made even better when Neil took a catch off his bowling in fading light. Andy finishing with figures of 3 for 14 off 3 overs as The Hawks kept it tight in the field, restricting Bosham to 118 for 8 and victory by 21 runs. |

June 30 Hawks v Compton (away) Scorecard |
||
Last ball thriller sees Hawks triumph! The ever improving Hawks stiffest challenge yet came at Compton this week. Local rules had two over's each and no lbw. Compton as the home team supplied the ball, a white one! Yet again Gareth called correctly and asked Compton's skipper, Keith Turner to field. Andy W and Paul W opened the innings on what must be the most picturesque ground on the South Downs. Paul's recent run of good form came to an abrupt end in the second when he top edged a quick one to the keeper for 4. Andy also skied one in the third and seemed to give up on the run! He soon took off half way down the pitch when he was dropped by the fielder, running backwards and trying to take the catch over his shoulder-a big let off! Gareth started well with a 4 and a 5 (over throws) before chipping one back to the bowler for 10. Compton's skipper called over number six as one having “a dodgy start but got better”, two wide's followed by a single and then a Yorker, bowling Andy for 10. JK and Ben were now at the crease. Ben was immense off his legs with a 6 and 4 in the seventh and another 6 in the eighth, later to retire with a 4 in the next over. Josh joined JK under instructions as he got to the middle to “run the first hard, in case a second was on”. Two over's later JK was run out taking the first too easy and not making the second! Do as I say, not as I do! Jon's 14 was made up of all singles except for one swash buckling 2. Josh made 17 with two fine boundaries before being bowled and Paul O Donohue followed in the same manor soon afterwards for 3. Tommy Wild and Justin were now together, but not for long. Justin bowled for a single 6. Tommy and Dave Loten looked set to complete the remaining over's, Dave playing second fiddle with six singles in his not out, but with two balls to go Tommy had to retire on 27. Steve Clark was 1 not out off one ball-not a bad run rate, as The Hawks finished on, 139 for 7 off 20. Tommy gave the Hawks a great start with a wicket in his first over, after being hit for 6 over Josh's head, Justin Dyssel swopped places and took the catch on the ropes. Justin was in action soon afterwards bowling the number 3 with his third ball and the number 4 with his fourth! Compton, 3 down and opener Tip Top not having faced a ball. Tommy soon had his second with a catch to dad behind the stumps. In the field The Hawks were ferocious, typified by Ben and Tommy's sickening collision as they both went for the same catch-both ending up in a heap on the floor, fortunately Ben with the ball in hand! When Ben recovered to bowl Tip top for 20, Compton were all over the place. Paul W maintained his concentration, after a slight juggle, to take a catch off Josh for the seventh wicket and next ball Tommy held another. Josh's hat trick ball was too good for the bats man, but too high for the stumps as well. Compton had one retirement leaving skipper Turner and the number eleven to attempt respectability. Dave L and Paul O'D kept things tight, but the tail was wagging well as Compton's most experienced bats men pushed and pulled. The Left/Right combination keeping the fielders moving, especially Gareth in the covers. With two over's to go Compton had fought back to need 22 off 12 balls and were sure to start hitting out. With the last three batters scoring 27, 30 and 23 respectively. Hawks win by 1 run. |

| 24 June | Hawks v Lavant (Home) |
Hawks won by 10 Runs |
|
Due the sheer volume of sport on TV at the moment your reporter is filing this copy a bit late and under the cloud of our proud nation's abject failure to perform in South Africa. On the day after our footballers where knocked out I had to turn the sport section back 6 pages to read the report of our cricketers one day series win over the old enemy Australia. Not only that but The Hawks first forty over Sunday game was cancelled by Walberton in order that their team could watch the game against Germany. What is wrong with the world?? Anyway, The Hawks return match against Lavant started badly as skipper Haskett lost the toss. Lavant skipper Richard called heads and elected to bowl. Matt and Paul opened as usual and as the tractor next door safely gathered in, both were off the mark quickly. Matt with a square 4 which must have pitched on the rope, but Neil umpiring at square leg was quick to signal 4- never one to give too much away, especially to Matt! Paul's opening 4 was straight over the bowlers head, after taking a quick one on the knuckles from Lavant pace man operating from the pavilion end. 20 off 3 overs The quickie pitched the first ball of the fourth up, and clean bowled Mat (10), bringing Andy W to the crease, who was then kept busy with his succession of Yorkers before hitting the last ball for four to get off the mark in the same style as the openers. 30 for 1 off 5 The keeper had a shocker in the sixth dropping a nick from Paul, Andy then hit straight four into the cornfield where the retrieving fielder also had a shocker from the electric fence! The home skipper sadly forgot to inform the opposition of that local hazard! Paul recovered well with a fine leg side six in the seventh, taking the score onto 46 - Walmsley on the back of 2 retirements was on great form consistently nicking the bowling from Andy W, who remarked to your reporter (umpiring in order to get inside information for your benefit) what a “fine partnership” this was! Paul was out next ball caught at square length 23. 52 for 2 off 9 Skipper Haskett senior came in at four and Andy opened up immediately with a 4 past square leg umpire at head height to retired on 27. This meant 2 new batsmen at the crease on zero as Dave L joined Gareth. Dave made it off the mark with an edge through the vacant slip taking the score at the end of the eleventh to 66 for 2. Gareth hit out in the next over but was caught on the pavilion ropes by a fine catch. As the sun dipped, the ball started to take off and the run rate slowed; not helped by Andy w, umpiring, calling Neil for a short run in the 15 th 83 for 3 off 15. Paul O'Donohue, was padded up and stalking the boundary ready for action as Lavant tried to keep things tight with pace one end and spin the other. Neal was after the slower bowler but kept picking out the fielder, but together with Dave the ones and twos kept the score ticking over, and Paul at bay. Even the edges were going The Hawks way, one in particular through the keepers gloves saving Dave. The eighth over was a turning point in the innings, Neil finally let loose. First ball, a big six into the car park, just failing to hit Gareth's car! Followed soon after by a four and retirement on 26. Paul finally came in and hit a leg side four first ball as the score rattled into 3 figures. 112 for 3 off 18 Paul top edged a catch to fine leg trying to force the pace and JK came in looking like a Swan Vesta in his red helmet only to be run out without facing. Keith (4n.o) and Dave (14n.o), with family looking on, saw the final over out with some good running between the wickets as The Hawks finished on 121 for 5 Matt and Josh opened the attack, and it was Haskett jnr. Who made the first breakthrough - his 4 overs for 15 and two wickets was an impressive piece of pace bowling. The Hawks fielding was immense both in front of the wicket and behind, with Neil mopping up even the widest Steve Clark's deliveries! Clark pitched in with1 wicket, caught Josh, for 13 off 2- he should have had another but Matt failed to snap up a dolly at mid off, and Dave Loten took 2 for 19 off of his 4 over's. The fielding was sharp with two run outs and fine catches particularly Gareth's close in, getting his body behind a well hit shot and taking the pace off with his torso before pocketing the ball. It all looked to be plain sailing as Lavant's last man came into the wicket with four over's to go. JK was to bowl his last over and everything looked rosie, the number 11 then hit him for 2 x 6s and a 4, spoiling his figure of 2 for 36 off 4 But yet again skipper Haskett turned to Keith Davey in a tight spot and he took the final wicket. Lavant finishing on 112 all out off 18, and the no 11 high and dry on 25 not out off 9 balls Hawks win- again!! Champagne moment - the Lavant scorer getting locked in the toilet. Bring on Compton, away on Wednesday 30th June! The mighty Hawks will have to be on tip top form! |
|||
After all the winter nets and last weeks practice match in Priory Park it was time to get serious with the first competitive game of the season, away to Lavant. A picturesque ground nestled at the foot of the downs, with a very short 30m boundary to the blossom trees on one side, and a rolling brook for the straight hitters to aim for opposite the pavilion. Captain Haskett won the toss and elected to field with a green wicket below and overcast skies above. |
|
Lavant to bat The field was set, Lavent scorer had her lap top on her knee (ours hasn't even got coloured pencils!), opening bowler Dave Loten was at the end of his run up, the bats men had taken guard and The Hawks second competitive season was about to get under way. Could the limited success of last season be built upon, by turning those almost there games into victories, or would they return yet again to snatch defeat from the jaws of success? Loten ran in. Dot ball-a great start! Despite the short boundary the Lavant openers struggled to get the ball away, in part due to the metronomic ‘on the spot' Loten, ably assisted at the other end by the menacing pace of Josh Haskett, backed up by exquisite fielding.The Hawks demonstrating early on that cricket is not just a game of batting and bowling, with fielders turning 2's into 1's (Walmsley putting his body on the line in the covers) and 4's into 2's (Vigor in the deep, patrolling the short boundary). The only blemish in a wonderful display of out field artistry was a juggling and subsequent put down , of a some would say difficult chance, by Haskett senior, diving forward at mid wicket. It was down to the first change bowlers to keep the runs down and try to turn the pressure into wickets as Lavant tried, unsuccessfully, to up the pace. Steve Clark took over number 6 allowing only one run, but it was Mat Chesshire who made the break through in his first over, with a ball flicking off stump in the 8th -and he went on to take 2 more in the 13 th . Clark, Keynes and Haskett Jnr. chipped in with one wicket each. Jon in particular unlucky not to profit from an appeal for a run out and caught behind, both of which looked like good shouts. Lavant finished on 97 for 6 , a score made respectable by hitting the last two balls for 4 and 6; never an easy over to bowl when the batting side have wickets in hand and a short boundary to aim for, and a low setting sun for the fielders to contend with, and a softening ball with which to bowl…. Can't think of any more excuses, but feel free to insert your own. If The Hawks lost this one that final over by Clark could prove to have been an expensive one! |
Hawks reply The first batting response of the year you would expect to be cautious and watchful. Far from it, full revs from ball one! Mat and Paul taking the attack to the bowlers and clocking up a rapid 50+ after half a dozen overs.
After Paul was out caught for 12 and Mat retired N.O. 28, wickets fell quickly-3 in one horrible over! Josh, Keith and James staking an early season claim for the most ducks trophy. Sorry lads.
There was a danger that Neil was going to be left high and dry, but Dave Loten hung up his umpires jacket and steadied the ship after the run rate crept up to around 7 an over with 4 to go.
But, on 10 to his name and 14 runs required of a handful of balls Loten was caught! The Hawks had the retired Chesshire in their locker should last man Steve Clark have been mysteriously ran out by Neil following a succession of dot balls, but few recall last season when Mat returned to the crease after a similar retirement only to be bowled first ball. Mat was not required, as Steve finished undefeated, blocking and running 3 singles to order! And so it was that a solid 17 and expert marshalling of the tail order by Neil, resulted in him scoring the winning runs with 2 balls to spare. What a game! |

Post match interviews and quotes were conducted in the earl of March. Matt Chesshire with 3 wickets for 6 runs and an unbeaten 28 was voted Man of the Match Apparently winning with the Hawks is “better than sex” Anon “it's not for the umpire to win the game, but the batsman to score the winning runs” John Paul Sartre “Jon, don't answer that phone. It's my wife and I'm going out to bat”! We'll leave the final word to man of the match Mat; “Best result? Neil getting the beers in. Didn't see that one coming! Which funnily enough is what he said repeatedly when watching the ball go past him behind the stumps” |

Chidham and Hambrook Cricket Club Match reports |
| New Logo Following a suggestion from someone who knows about this kind of stuff, the Chidham and Hambrook Cricket Club logo has been re done! I know it may seem a little early for a re branding, we haven't even played a game yet, but we hope you agree that the new colour scheme is far superior to the 'old' one. Please also find attached our fixtures for 2009. The team is currently under going intensive winter net training in preperation for the up coming season. All home fixtures will be played at the West Ashling CC until we find a few acres locally! |
40 years of hurt! Organised Cricket stopped being played in our community over forty years ago, but its back with the newly formed Chidham & Hambrook Cricket Club. Fixture details and full match reports will be available on your local web site in due course. When asked about the clubs status, fixture secretary Jon Keynes said, “Happening but homeless”! He added, “The team would like to become more competitive with a focus on winning as well as enjoyment, encouragement, development of all players associated. We know we have something unique”. Both villages are sadly without a cricket pitch at this time but are on the look out for any local land owner with a few acres to spare and a passion for the sound of leather on willow. The newly formed club has received a small amount of sponsorship locally, but do need more equipment. Anyone interested in a sponsorship deal can contact the committee via this web site. The competitive season will start mid May until the beginning of September. On the subject of home matches the team will be looking for between 6 and 8 games, and the West Ashling pitch will be used. The side has a current core of 12 players, of course any new players would be considered after showing commitment at nets and on going matches. Subs for playing are £5 per game for the home team, £3 for under 16's and £40 for the opposition. Jon Keynes and Gareth Haskett will share the Captaincy on the field of play. Paul Walmsley will act as the first season's social secretary. Events will act as team building and fund raisers for the club. Anyone interested in joining the team in any capacity should contact; LogoNote |
