Play Area Balloon Race Winner

We have had two labels returned from the Play Area Balloon Race and now, after two months from the launch we are have ended the competition. To our surprise and delight we had a label returned from a Jutta Rohrlack in Harrislee , Germany which, for a while looked like being the winner. However, a few weeks later the second label was returned from Aku Kalpa in Nauvo , Finland who we have now declared as the one that has flown the furthest and we have sent them a reward for their efforts.

I can reveal that the balloon found in Germany was purchased by May Woolley who lives in Broad Road, but the one found in Finland was purchased by Beth Brown of Willow View, Broad Road. We will be sending Beth a prize shortly.

Thank you to all those who took part on the day and to Mike Smith for his help with blowing them up and the Launch and also to Dave Ball for providing the Helium.
Andy Collins

The balloon travelled about 1100 miles!

AUTUMN GENERAL MEETING REPORT

Hambrook & District Residents Association

  AUTUMN GENERAL MEETING REPORT

  October 2006

I am pleased to report that the association Autumn General Meeting was well attended and that most subjects concerning the residents were addressed. A glass of wine each helped to lubricate everyone and get the evening off to a good start.

In attendance were our County Councillor Mark Dunn, District Councillor Myles Cullen and Parish Council Chairman Mike Penny. We had apologies from Mary Marrs of Southbourne Parish Council who would normally give us the views from our neighbouring Parish.

The Association Chairman welcomed everyone and gave a brief review of events over the last six months and what activities they are currently involved in. Individual reports were then presented on the following issues and activities:

  • New Minerals and Waste Plan: Alan Morse
  • Speeding and Traffic: Mike Penny
  • Grain Store: Myles Cullen and Trevor Nightingale
  • Hambrook Holiday Site: Andy Collins
  • Sewage and Flooding: Nigel Else
  • New Play Area: Nigel Else
  • Social Events: Andy Collins
  • Millennium Meadow: Nigel Else
  • Wild Flower Project: John Wingrove

Each of the above reports was thrown open to questions from the audience at the end. There is to much for me to repeat each of the reports here, but I can say each one was covered in enough depth within the time allowing for all those attending to get a good understanding of each.

Our Parish Council Chairman, Mike Penny, addressed the meeting on some of the local issues that had been reported on above. He also asked for all those who were interested a village clean up to support Michael Gladwin on November 4 th (see link on the front page of the website).

Myles Cullen our District Councillor talked briefly about the Bourne Forum and the changes that were being proposed for Local Councils. Input from Resident Associations was going to be one area that he believed would become more important in the future. There were a number of questions put to Myles regarding planning, development and other issues reported on earlier.

Mark Dunn, our County Councillor addressed the issue of youth by talking about how the Council were trying to overcome some of the problems coming from this sector throughout the County. He stated that there where funds available if required to help solve some of these problems. He believed there were some signs of improvements in the general well being and attitude from the younger members of our society thanks to the Councils efforts but there was still a long way to go.

Our Open Forum at the end went back over some of the above issues. A proposal was made to increase membership by including an application form in the next News Letter and was agreed would be done.

The time, now getting late and the wine all gone, the Chairman thanked everyone for attending and declared the meeting closed. The next meeting will be the AGM on March 14 th 2007 which deals with the election of members and annual reports.

Chairman

Note from the Chairman

With the Christmas and New Year celebrations behind us, we are now looking at the year ahead. From the Hambrook and District Residents Associations point of view we start the year with several issues and projects already in the pipe line, or that have been started, to concentrate on.

We need to complete the new children’s play area before the start of the summer months. Some of you may have noticed the activity that has already taken place, but we need to make a final push to complete the task. Nigel has written a small piece in the News Letter bringing you up to date on the progress. The picture above was taken a couple of weeks ago and although a bit dark you can see the new fence that has already been erected.

As has been reported in previous News Letters and in the local press, the issue of mineral extraction is once again threatening the area around the village. It seems to me we have no need for further extraction of gravel from land based quarries in this area when there is plenty just off the coast. When you extract something from the bottom of the sea, the resulting scar is covered by water. But when you dig a big hole in the ground we are left with an ugly mess for years until Mother Nature takes over again. I am told the sea bed recovers within a year of extraction. I am also told that the builders are happy to use gravel from either source. We are once again involved in the process of trying to prevent new quarry’s from being agreed to in this area and will keep you informed of our progress.

The Parish Council I see from their News Letter is starting the process of trying to provide a new village hall. This is in response to the wishes of the community included in the new Parish Plan. I believe this is a good project for the H & D R A to become involved with and will raise the subject at the AGM in March.

Once again the AGM will take the usual format with reports from the existing committee and the election of officers and new committee members and there will be an open session at the end. Please try and make it and if you feel like volunteering you will be more than welcome.

Earth moves in Broad Road

Local contractor John Castle has started preparing the ground for the new play area in Broad Road. Over the next couple of weeks hard landscaping, grass seeding and the access bridge will be installed. It has been reported to the web site that "the initial bridge design has had to be straightened following council concerns that motor bikes would be using the crossing to gain access to the adjacent field" !
The play area design has been carried out by Playdale, and a spokes person said "although an order had yet to be placed, the equipment could be available within 6-8 weeks".

Litter
By being members of the association you have already demonstrated your concern for the well-being of the village. One problem we have to grapple with is that of litter. Unfortunately it is an increasing one here and throughout the country. We can all do our part in trying to educate our young people (and some not so young) not to drop litter, however significant amounts seem to be thrown from passing cars. It would be great if each of us frequently clears any litter away from the area in front of our homes. There are a few other areas that it would be good to keep cleared and if you are prepared to look after a small area on a regular basis do please contact me.
