We are very pleased to welcome you to this page. We hope that it will provide you with helpful information about the school and interesting news about current events.
Our school is in a beautiful location overlooking the Bosham Channel and with views across the fields. There are just less than a hundred pupils, aged between 4 and 11 years old in four mixed age range classes.

Chidham is a small school with a strong family ethos. The children are offered a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum, which acknowledges different learning styles and the individual contributions that each child and their family brings to the school.

As a ‘Foundation’ school we have strong links with the local parish church and with the Diocese. St Mary’s Church is a short scenic walk away and a number of school celebrations take place there.
The school was awarded "Healthy School" status in 2006
Lynda Aplin retired as Head Teacher of Chidham Primary School at the end of this summer term. Lynda had been Head Teacher for sixteen years. In that time Lynda made Chidham school hugely successful, with significant improvements to the school buildings and facilities, and a sharp increase in the number of pupils and the number wanting to attend the school. She also worked very well with both the church and the community. Chidham school is both a focus for and strongly supported by the community.
We wish her well in her retirement.
A new Head Teacher has been appointed and she will start from the beginning of 2011. For the autumn term the school will be run with the help of a deputy head seconded to Chidham.

Chidham School celebrating 100 years on its present site
Saturday 17th July 2010 The 100 year celebrations were marked by a reunion of former staff and pupils at which Mrs. Aplin introduced the new head, Claire Murphy.
The hall had an historical display of life at the school and world events from the last century and the children performed Chidham schools signature maypole dance. Many class friends from year’s gone by chatted about the school and their memories over a cream tea and former pupil Arther Cooper helped Mrs. Aplin raise the flag on what was a truly magical day.

The overall effectiveness of the School - (extract from the report)
Chidham is a good school. It has a prominent profile in the local community and serves the
neighbourhood exceptionally well. The school's partnership with parents is outstanding. Parents are extremely supportive of the school and are confident that their children are exceptionally well cared for and challenged to do well. One comment typical of many can be summed up by one who said, 'It is an excellent example of a local community school where each child is encouraged to achieve their best.'

Chidham School's production of "The Light of the World"
written by Liz Jones
The school staged  matinee and evening perfomances on Tuesday 16th December to packed houses in the new sports hall.
All the children  participated in this hilarious musical retelling of the nativity story which featured bored shepherds, learner angels and King Herod, who was described as
"a bit of a weirdo"!
"The Light of the World" was written by Liz Jones. Lynda Aplin and teachers Matt Chesshire, Louise MacDonald, Lynda Scott and Sue Lambert were  involved in staging the performance. Musical support was from Jan Lewis and Rod Starr. Thanks to Sarah Foye for the report and photos.

Chidham School goes for the International School Award!

By 2020 the Government would like all schools to be models of good global citizenship, enriching their educational mission with activities that improve the lives of people living in other parts of the world. Chidham School has now registered for the Foundation Stage of this award.

The school plans to extend the work that they already do within the curriculum to help children understand the cultures, geography and environment, character and concerns, languages, religions and economic circumstances of people elsewhere in the world so that they are prepared for life in a global society.

French is taught throughout the school and the children in Years 5 and 6 already have a link with a school in France . The school is also in the early stages of developing a partnership with a school in Sierra Leone .

In seeking to embed an international ethos they would be very grateful to know of anyone locally who has any artefacts, experience, knowledge, contacts or ideas which they would be happy to share with the school.

The DCSF (Department for Children, Schools and Families) International School Award accreditation is supported by the British Council and ties in with other school initiatives such as ‘Every Child Matters' and ‘Community Cohesion'.

Local School Children go Wild for Birdwatching - Nov 2008
Children from Chidham School have been discovering some amazing facts about the wildlife around their school. A bird watching club has been set up as a joint venture between the school and Chichester Harbour Conservancy Education Service.

Conservancy teachers Ruth Street and Alison Parsons, with the help of Matt Chesshire, a keen bird watcher and teacher at the school have been helping children learn in a fun way about the wonders of bird migration.

Focusing on Greenshank, a wading bird that is seen in Chichester Harbour each autumn and spring the children play a game based on a large floor map of the route that Greenshanks fly. The students discover the good and bad things that can happen to the birds on the way, the peregrines from Chichester Cathedral are one of the hazards to be avoided!
In addition, a group of enthusiastic children have joined an after-school birdwatching club. Activities include recording which species they see and finding out more about birds in general such as how they feed, how they are adapted to their habitats and why Chichester Harbour is so important for wintering birds.

Lynda Aplin, the Head at Chidham School, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to find out more about their local environment and because of the generous funding children have been able to take part without the barrier of cost which so often applies to extra curricular activities.”

The information recorded is also being entered on the RSPB website as part of a national survey on bird migration. Wildsquare encourages children to find out which birds are in a square kilometre near them and to make a record once in October, November and December. This data is then entered on the RSPB website to help build up a national picture of the location of different species. This helps the children to feel that they are making a positive contribution to conservation.

The bird club is part of the Greenshank Migration Project organised by Farlington Ringing Group. Funding for this project has come from Chichester Harbour Conservancy Sustainable Development Fund, Chichester District Council and the Friends of Chichester Harbour.
28th June: Chidham School helped get this year's Chichester Festivities off to a spectacular start by taking part in the sixth harmonic Convergence lantern procession.
Children, families and staff joined local artists and bands in a precession of light and sound along North and East Street, coming together at the Cathedral in an explosion of music and fireworks.

Chidham School's Walking Bus

Chidham schools walking bus set off for the first time on May 25. Children can join the bus along the route as long as they have booked a place and there are enough adults to supervise.
If you would like more details or can help please ask at the office - the bus currently operates on Fridays only but may be expanded if help can be found to share the work.

And contributing to the Walking Bus world record attempt

On 15 June we are taking part in the Record-Breaking Walking Bus, co-ordinated by Brake, the road safety charity. Pupils will aim to break a Guinness World Record by marching for safer roads in our community! They will learn important lessons on how to stay safe on foot and can also help to raise sponsorship for the event in aid of Brake. Click here or on the logo to go to Brake's website and find out more about the event. Also on Brake's website you can find road safety information for:

Chidham school sports hall was officially opened today by Professor Philip Robinson, Principal of the University of Chichester. He unveiled a plaque made by the children and spoke to them of them importance of 'play'! Mrs. Aplin welcomed and thanked guests involved in the project, as well as governors, staff, the PTFA and, not least, the children.
The PTFA presented Mrs. Aplin with an engraved vase in recognition of her dedication to the project. The celebration concluded with a mass balloon release and of course tea and cake.
